When to use Meta Tag Gen

  • Launching a new page: Generate the complete meta tag set before a page goes live. Missing OG tags mean the page will share without a preview image on social media.
  • Optimising click-through rate from search: Rewrite the meta description for pages ranking in positions 5-15 in GSC - a more compelling description can lift CTR without changing the ranking.
  • Setting robots directives for staging environments: Generate noindex, nofollow tags for staging or preview URLs to prevent them from appearing in search results before the production launch.
  • Auditing social sharing for a page redesign: Generate fresh OG and Twitter Card tags when redesigning a page - stale cached previews can be refreshed by updating the og:image URL with a cache-busting query string.

How meta tags control search snippets and social previews

The Meta Tag Generator produces the complete set of meta tags required for search engine optimisation and social sharing previews from a single form. It generates four distinct groups of tags: core HTML meta tags (title, description, robots, canonical), Open Graph protocol tags (og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url, og:type), Twitter Card tags (twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image), and structured crawl directives (noindex, nofollow, noarchive).

The title tag is the most important signal in search ranking - Google uses it as the primary label for the blue link in search results and it appears in browser tabs and bookmarks. The tool enforces a character count display (recommended maximum 60 characters) because Google typically displays approximately 580 pixels of title text, which corresponds to roughly 55-60 characters in a medium-weight sans-serif font. The meta description does not directly affect ranking but strongly influences click-through rate; the recommended limit of 155-160 characters reflects Google's snippet truncation threshold.

Open Graph tags (defined by Facebook in 2010 and now the social sharing standard) are read by LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, and X when a URL is shared. Twitter Card tags are a superset that X reads in addition to OG tags - if both are present, Twitter Card tags take precedence for X previews. The og:image URL should point to a 1200 x 630 px image (1.91:1 ratio) for optimal display across all platforms. The tool generates all tags as a single copyable HTML block ready to paste into the <head> section.
